Lund University in Sweden is all set to celebrate the post-colonial liberation icon and the founder of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 100th birth anniversary.

Marking the occasion, the university’s Swedish South Asian Studies Network – SASNET – will host a seminar titled "Sheikh Mujib: Icon of postcolonial liberation" on December 3, 2020, said a press release issued in this regard on Thursday.

The university has invited the Bengali-Swedish poet Anisur Rahman, along with his translator, and Swedish poet Kristian Carlsson to take part in the event.

The speakers at the event will present Anisur's book “Jag är Sheikh Mujib (I am Sheikh Mujib),” said the release adding, “Bengali-Swedish author Anisur's epic monologue ‘I Am Sheikh Mujib’ depicts the twentieth-century freedom struggle on the Indian subcontinent through the voice of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - from British colonial times to the first tentative years of independent Bangladesh under his leadership.

“Along the way, this political struggle was to a large extent also about the right to one's own language.”

The seminar, to be held at the SASNET seminar hall on Lund University campus in Sweden, will extend the scope for enthusiasts in different parts of the world for online access, read the release.

The literary works of Anisur – author of Jag är Sheikh Mujib (I am Sheikh Mujib) and a member in the board of the Swedish Writers’ Union – includes prose, poetry, novel, short story and books for children. His plays have been presented on Swedish Radio Theatre, NRK Norwegian Radio Theatre and at theatres in Bangladesh, India, Sweden, Armenia, Georgia, and Norway. Educated at the Dhaka University and Stockholm University, Anisur works for Swedish Centre for Literature in Uppsala and leads creative writing programs. He is also heavily involved in literary-cultural debates in several Bangladeshi and Swedish media houses.

Swedish poet Kristian Carlsson together with Anisur have translated the epic monologue titled ‘I Am Sheikh Mujib’ into the Swedish language. Kristian is also an editor and literary curator whose literary productions are mainly in Swedish, including pieces in English, Bengali, and Georgian. He is a professional translator with international repute. He has translated a section of Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works into Swedish.
